Watch Out!

It’s often said that God will give you what you want, but be careful what you pray for. What you end up with may be something entirely other than what you got. And that is true. Because He loves you, He wants to always please you.

So, I have always envisioned living in a home overlooking the water. Now, I never did conclude whether or not it would be an ocean or lake. But since I have a fresh water fishing addiction,

I would imagine that God would pick up on that and give me what my mind has molded in thought. After all, He knows what we want even before we ask. So it wouldn’t be hard to come up with a thought and then have Him carry it through.

However, He always wants us to ask verbally. That is how a relationship works. After all, I could look at my friend Ray, but he would have no idea that I needed a ride to Ligonier just thinking it without asking for it. So, I would have to ask, “Ray, would you be so kind as to drive me to my accountant’s office in Ligonier at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning?”

That’s what God wants us to do, too – ask in prayer for our needs or desires.

So, getting back to my story, I have always desired an abode overlooking water. There is something to be said about it, releasing stress and producing calmness. I can only assume that is why so many famous people and travelers always want views whereby one can see the rising or setting of the sun where the water is no longer seen and the sky begins. The placidity of such a view calms the soul.

One can begin to understand then why this senior citizen would want such a view. Overlooking water captivates everything one could want to set the stage for relaxation and distraction from mental fatigue.

There is no question, then, that I believe with all my heart that God knows I have always wanted to live in a house overlooking the water. There are two problems that come to mind right off the bat. First, I didn’t pray about my intention. Since God knew my heart, I just figured He would give me what is best. He knew. Second, I didn’t state where this water was to be.

As result, one day we got new neighbors. Watching from my window, I could see that their intention of the utilization of their back yard drew my attention. They had a company come in and construct a large swimming pool. The company that did the construction did a top-notch job, to say the least.

When it came to the summer, the pool was filled and the neighbors and children could be seen swimming in the water.

Oh yes, God knew my heart all right. I got my dream, sort of. I live in a residence overlook the water. I learned my lesson. Instead of just thinking something, pray about it, telling Him exactly what you want. He will provide with something maybe better than you ever imagined.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened.

A couple of years ago, I was invited to attend a wedding in the Florida Keys. I contacted a hotel for accommodations and was given one with a balcony overlooking the water. My heart started to beat. When I got there I headed for the small porch. Upon standing on it, there it was, water, a swimming pool right below my window. I had flown all the way down here to see a common sight, a rectangular basin holding gallons of what appeared to be blue liquid. Wonderful…

Recently, I was talking to a woman who related that she had finally given in and purchased a new car. She and her two children went to a dealership and picked one out. After signing the papers, she drove her car home. “When I turn on the heater, my windows frosted up. The tires in front are bald, and I have to change my oil every six months. On top of all that, I have five gears. If I don’t change over at the right time, I hear a grinding sound… I have a speech all worked out when I see the mechanic next!”

The moral of this story is, watch out for what you think versus actual asking. There is a difference you now know.
